DraftKings Launches Mobile Betting in Indiana, Pennsylvania Next in Line

In one of the most eventful weeks for the global gambling industry in a while, DraftKings had a fair share of headlines dedicated to its US sports betting expansion.

It became known over the past few days that the daily fantasy sports turned sports betting operator will go live in Indiana later today and will probably be able to enter Pennsylvania’s athletic gambling mix in November through a partnership with The Meadows Racetrack & Casino.

A last-minute decision announced by the Indiana Gaming Commission Wednesday authorized DraftKings to launch a digital sports betting operation in the state. The operator made it possible to enter Indiana’s regulated wagering space through a partnership with Penn National Gaming, which runs Ameristar East Chicago.

The Wednesday approval of DraftKings’ bid to enter the Indiana digital betting space means that the operator and its local partner will join French Lick Casino and Rush Street Interactive as the first operators go live with online and mobile wagering in Indiana.

State lawmakers legalized sports betting earlier this year. Thirteen Indiana-based gambling venues were authorized to operate retail wagering by the state gambling regulator. Sports betting at brick-and-mortar properties kicked off on September 1, just days ahead of the NFL Kickoff Game on September 5.

Aside from its imminent launch in Indiana, it also became known this week that DraftKings is gearing up preparations to go live with its mobile betting platform in Pennsylvania. The Keystone State is an important market not only for DraftKings but also for any operator with big sports betting expansion plans as the state is one of the most populous US states.

It was this past Wednesday again when the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board approved the launch of a retail sportsbook at The Meadows Racetrack & Casino in the Pittsburgh area. A testing period with the regulator will take place on October 8-9 and the gambling venue will hold a grand opening ceremony for its betting facility on October 10.

The Meadows physical sportsbook will be operated in-house by Penn National Gaming’s sports betting and online gaming division, Penn Interactive.

DraftKings, on the other hand, will run an online and mobile wagering operation in partnership with the gambling venue. The launch of the retail facility will not coincide with the rollout of DraftKings’ digital operation, as the operator is yet to receive approval from the Gaming Control Board.

DraftKings’ betting license application is set to be reviewed by the regulator during its October 30 meeting.

The DFS and betting operator currently takes wagers in four states – New Jersey, where it went live in August 2018 to establish itself as one of the leaders in the local sports betting field, New York, where it operates a retail sportsbook at del Lago Resort & Casino, and Mississippi, where it runs a brick-and-mortar operation at Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort in Biloxi, and West Virginia, where it rolled out a mobile sportsbook last month.
